Opening Social and Poster Session

Kick off NORM2023 with the opening social and poster session. Meet members of the ACS Governance. Enjoy an appetizer and learn about the great science happening in the Northwest region. Please note: maximum poster size is 4' wide by 6' tall. Posters may be hung starting at 3:30 PM.

Welcome Address with Judy Giordan

Judith C. “Judy” Giordan, Ph.D. is the 2023 American Chemical Society president.

Plenary Session

Join Prof. Joan Broderick (Montana State University) for our plenary. Prof. Broderick, recently elected to two prestigious national academies, is well-known for her advancements in bioinorganic chemistry, specifically the structure and function of iron-sulfur clusters. Her work has been described as “beautiful science” by JoAnne Stubbe.

Trust in Science Workshop

Workshop. Join ACS President Judy Giordan as she hosts the Trust in Science Workshop, aimed at ensuring ACS members are a trusted voice for science and scientists, equipped with the tools to advocate for this trust with all people–both those trained in science and those who are not.

Ponderosa Social Club

Social Event. Relax and have fun at the Ponderosa Social Club. Bowling, specialty drinks, delicious food, and good times abound in this relaxed environment in North Bozeman. Registration is free for this event, but you are responsible for your own food/drink. Click through for carpooling information.

Fun Run/Walk to a Local Brewery

Social Event. Take part in the Bozeman tradition of a social fun run to Bridger Brewing. Variable distances. Registration is free for this event, but you are responsible for your own food/drink. Click through for group meetup information.

Hike to College M

Social Event. Join a hike up to this iconic Bozeman landmark and enjoy beautiful views of Bozeman and the Gallatin valley. Note: “The M” is a moderate/strenuous 2.4+ mile round trip hike with over 800 feet of elevation gain. Please make sure you have appropriate footwear and water. Click through for bussing information.

Story Mill Community Park Walk

Social Event. Enjoy a beautiful June evening with an easy stroll through Story Mill Park, a bird sanctuary and sculpture garden. Click through for carpooling information.

Undergraduate Student Breakfast

Social Event. All undergraduate students are welcomed and encouraged to attend this (early morning!) breakfast prior to the Friday technical sessions. Networking with fellow undergraduates will be facilitated over a light breakfast along with refreshments. The facilitator/venue of this breakfast are to be determined, depending on participation – don’t miss out on this chance to meet a diverse crowd of accomplished junior-career researchers from your region!

Finding Yourself: Identifying a Career that Matches Your Strengths and Values

Workshop. Self-assess your career values and strengths. Participants will also learn how the four sectors of chemistry employment compare and contrast. This course will also help you determine which sector best aligns to your values and strengths and plan your next steps to obtaining an ideal position

Networking: How to get Started

Workshop. Utilize networking to enhance your job search. Participants will also learn which types of questions to create a natural flow in a networking conversation. The course will also help you create a networking plan to locate and obtain your ideal job in the federal government.

Women Chemists Committee Luncheon

Social Event and Keynote. Honoring ACS 2023 F. Albert Cotton Award in Inorganic Synthetic Chemistry May Nyman. The program will include an update from representatives of the national WCC and a keynote address by Dr. Nyman who will describe key milestones, motivating forces, scientific and personal passions and challenges that drove her career decisions, triumphs, and even regrets. Dr. Nyman will highlight advances in metal-oxo cluster chemistry and X-ray scattering to ‘peer into solutions’, and how she applies these disciplines to the escalating environmental challenges of the 21st century.

Careers in Industrial Chemistry

Workshop. Identifying Your Role in the Industrial Value Chain offers an overview of the job market and job types for industrial chemistry. Participants will also learn how the industrial value chain can be used as a tool to help refine your job search in alignment with your strengths and values. The course will also help uncover key components of job descriptions and participants will learn how to break down job descriptions to best match job opportunities with their experience, strengths, and values.

Closing Ceremony – Food Truck Rodeo – Awards Presentation

Social Event. To close the meeting, take a short walk from campus and join us at the historic Story Mansion for a memorable summer evening under the Big Sky, with artisanal food provided by The Mighty Spork Food Truck and craft beer provided by Bozeman Brewing Company! We’ll recognize the regional award winners and close out NORM 2023 with food, fun, and new friends. Click through for group travel information.

Live Music – The Dirt Farmers

Social Event. Get ready to be entertained by the legendary Dirt Farmers, Bozeman’s one and only “Montana bluegrass, country, roots music, and paisley-grass” string band!
